On Monday 29 June, the Isle of Man Domestic Abuse Forum hosted a one-day conference exploring the question “What does domestic abuse look like on the Isle of Man?”. The event took place at Keyll Darree from 9:00am to 4:30pm.
The conference brought together professionals from a range of agencies, alongside representatives from corporate and third-sector organisations, to highlight the work of the multi-agency Domestic Abuse Forum and strengthen collaborative responses to domestic abuse.
The day opened with welcome remarks from Jane Poole-Wilson MHK, Minister for Justice and Home Affairs.
This was followed by a presentation from Lorna Trevethan, CEO of Victim Support Isle of Man and Chair of the Domestic Abuse Forum, who provided an overview of domestic abuse with a particular focus on coercive control.
Delegates then attended a series of six interactive workshops covering key themes, including:
- The work of the Police Protecting Vulnerable People Team
- Financial matters and financial abuse, delivered by the Salvation Army Debt Management Service
- Space4Action and the Own My Life course and awareness training
- Education and Children’s Services (MASH), alongside The Children’s Centre
- Addressing coercive control and the impact of addiction on children and families, led by Motiv8 and The Children’s Centre
- Adult safeguarding, including a focus on elder abuse
The day concluded with two additional workshops followed by a question-and-answer session, providing delegates with an opportunity to reflect on learning and share insights.
