Carers Week 2026 takes place from 8–14 June, providing an important opportunity to highlight the vital role that unpaid carers play across the Isle of Man, including children and young people who provide care to family members.

This year celebrate the theme of 'Building Carer Friendly Communities' - Where carers feel recognised and can balance their responsibilities with their own wellbeing.

As reported by Public Heath, 'The 2021 Isle of Man Census identified 4,869 unpaid carers living on the island'.

The Isle of Man Safeguarding Board will be highlighting the theme as well as the collaborative work being undertaken by The Carers Strategy and Carers themselves.

Why This Matters for Safeguarding

Carers play a vital role within families and communities, but caring responsibilities can also bring challenges, including impacts on emotional wellbeing, physical health, and social isolation.

For children and young people, these challenges can represent a safeguarding concern if their needs are not recognised or supported. Professionals across all agencies have a role in:

  • identifying young carers
  • understanding the impact of caring responsibilities
  • ensuring children’s needs and voices are heard
  • providing timely support and intervention where needed

Recognising Young Carers

A carer is anyone who provides unpaid care to a family member or friend who has an illness, disability, mental health condition, or requires additional support.

For some children and young people, this responsibility can form a significant part of their daily lives. Young carers may help with practical tasks, provide emotional support, and take on responsibilities beyond what would normally be expected for their age.

From a safeguarding perspective, it is essential that young carers are identified early and that their needs are recognised. Without the right support, caring responsibilities can impact on a child’s education, wellbeing, and social development.

Carers Week provides an opportunity for professionals, families and communities to better understand the experiences of young carers and to ensure they receive appropriate support.
